A community meeting held on January 25, 1994 to publicly acknowledge the contribution of area people and organizations brought together more than 70 people prompting the formal development of the Rainy River Valley Safety coalition. This group took community safety beyond specific sector events by joining diverse community organizations in a united goal
In 1994 The Rainy River Valley Safety Coalition committed to “Working to become the safest community in Canada through effective injury prevention and safety programs.
The Coalition succeeded through various programs and initiatives to become recognized as a Canadian Safe Community in 1997.
In 2002 the Rainy River Valley Safety Coalition hosted the 11th Annual World Health Safe Communities conference, with over 250 delegates from 23 countries around the world. The theme of the conference was “Growing Safe Communities”. On May 9, 2002, the Rainy River District was officially declared a World Health Organization Safe Community
The coalition continues to thrive, supporting ongoing programs as well as looking for new ways to promote safety throughout the district.
